Imagine this, a retro futuristic western RPG thatâs as much inspired by Fallout as it is Red Dead Redemption.
Well, thatâs pretty much what the upcoming game ExeKiller is.
Developed by Paradark Studio and set to launch on PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S in the remainder for 2025, ExeKiller is a first-person title that combines both action-adventure and shooter elements.
Itâs set within a dystopian alternate world where humanity is struggling to cope with the effects of a major catastrophe thatâs largely destroyed the Earth, turning into a scorched wasteland.
Youâll assume the role of Denzel Fenix, an Exekiller, which is essentially a bounty hunter that serves a corporation known as Helion which is situated in a huge structure in the remains of New York.
Within the game, Denzel uncovers a truth about himself that makes him the target of several major factions, kickstarting a difficult game of survival.
Players will get to explore a semi open-world with several hub locations, where youâll have to fend off dangerous enemies and avoid environmental hazards.
The game is one that values player agency and so there are plenty of choices that youâll make thatâll shape how the story plays out; each quest will have multiple solutions, for example.
The actions you take can determine the attitude of NPCs and the gameâs ending.
Youâll have a car to explore this semi open-world but some areas will only unlock when you reach certain points in the story.
I quite like that the âdynamic dialogue systemâ reportedly âdoes not interrupt gameplayâ, so âthe player retains full freedom of movement and action, making it possible to carry on a conversation while driving or shootingâ.
As for combat, well, you can either go in guns blazing or you can take a subtler and more stealthy approach.
Denzel can hack certain items, using them to his advantage.
Weirdly, thereâs no XP or levelling up in this game with progression coming from augments and the discovery of new pieces of tech.
ExeKiller hasnât pinned down a release date just yet, with it retaining a vague window of 2025.
I really do hope itâs not one of those games that falls into the category of âtoo good to be trueâ and remains in development hell for forever and a day.
A Dev Diary landed on Steam in July of this year, which is something, plus Paradark is incredibly active on Twitter/X.
Hopefully, before long, weâll get a release date or at the very least an update or demo of some kind.
