As the PlayStation 5 approaches its fifth anniversary, Sony Interactive Entertainment and AMD are looking to the future. The companies have not been too secretive about how they’ve been working together to bring the next generation of gaming into players’ hands with their next console, the PS6. Well, it seems we have a rough idea of when that generation will begin, thanks to a new statement from SIE.
PS6 release date window ‘in a few years time,’ says Sony
In a new video from SIE and AMD, AMD SVP and GM Jack Huynh, and PS5 and PS5 Pro lead architect Mark Cerny sit down to further discuss their latest developments from Project Amethyst, its collaborative project focused on Machine Learning technology for video games. This included three technological breakthroughs: Neural Arrays, Radiance Cores, and Universal Compression.
Neural Arrays allow compute units to share and process data together like a single AI engine rather than splitting up the data to individual units. Radiance Cores are a new dedicated hardware that gives players higher performance real-time ray and path tracing. Lastly, Universal Compression is a system that can compress data within the GPU to reduce memory bandwidth usage. Anyone who wants more in-depth explanations about each of these facets should watch the video of Huynh and Cerny above.
At the end of the video, Cerny makes an interesting remark about the future of this technology, as he mentions PlayStation’s “future console” and when fans can expect its release.
“I’m really looking forward to what improvements Universal Compression will bring, and to what degree the effective bandwidth of the GPU will exceed its paper spec,” says Cerny. “There’s a multitude of benefits from this, including lower power consumption, higher fidelity assets, and perhaps most importantly, the synergies that Universal Compression has with Neural Arrays and Radiance Cores as we work to deliver the best possible experiences to gamers. Overall, it’s of course still very early days of these technologies, they only exist in simulation right now, but the results are quite promising and I’m really excited about bringing them to a future console in a few years time.”
A few years could mean a lot of things. It could me we could see the PS6 in two years; it also means we could see it in five years. We’ll just have to wait and see.
