PS5 Sales in Japan Reportedly Increase Six-Fold After Region-Locked Version’s Release

Aside from Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls and Elden Ring Nightreign – The Forsaken Hollows, this month’s State of Play Japan didn’t really have much to offer. However, Sony’s region-locked PS5 Digital Edition, retailing for ¥55,000 (roughly $357), is seemingly a success.

Famitsu’s estimated hardware sales for the week of November 17th to 23rd have been revealed, and the PS5 Digital Edition is sitting at second place with 23,381 units sold. Combined with PS5 Pro (11,367) and the base PS5 (2,235), the console family’s total sales reached 36,983. And this with the region-locked version spending only two days on the market.

Compare this to the previous week’s estimates, where the PS5 Digital Edition sold a meager 489 units and the entire line-up was estimated at just 5,855 sales. A six-fold increase is probably more than Sony expected and should go a long way towards the company’s plans for 90 million units by the end of the year.

Globally, the PS5 has shipped a whopping 84.2 million units. It already surpassed the PlayStation 3’s lifetime install base in the United States.

Absolutely, it’s impressive how the region-locked version has made a difference. It seems that catering to local preferences can really boost sales. This might also encourage more game developers to consider regional releases tailored to specific markets.
