Sony’s PS5 has outsold the Nintendo Switch 2 for the second month in a row in the US, as Resident Evil Requiem reigns supreme.

The Nintendo Switch 2 is the fastest-selling console ever, but the big question is whether it can continue that momentum in the months to come.

There have been reports that the console sold less than expected in the West during the Christmas season, something which Nintendo itself has admitted – citing the lack of titles which appeal to Western audiences.

In the month of January, PlayStation 5 console sales were higher than the Nintendo Switch 2 in the US, in both unit sales and total dollars. That could have been an anomaly, but the same thing has happened again in the month of February.

As highlighted by Circana senior director Mat Piscatella, Sony’s PlayStation 5 outsold the Nintendo Switch 2 in both unit and dollar sales last month. ‘Nintendo Switch 2 repeated its January performance ranking second across both measures,’ he wrote on Bluesky.

While this might sound concerning for Switch 2 sales, Nintendo’s console is still outpacing the original Switch overall. ‘With nine months in market, the life-to-date installed base of Nintendo Switch 2 is trending 45% ahead of the original Switch,’ he added.

The Nintendo Switch 2’s success offset year-on-year hardware spending declines across PlayStation 5, Switch, and Xbox Series X/S consoles. In February, hardware spending across all consoles increased 22% compared to a year ago.

So if PlayStation 5 sales, which have declined compared to a year ago, are still beating Switch 2 sales in the US, what’s the takeaway? It’s difficult to assess, but this could be a case of Switch 2 sales slowing down after its massive opening months, combined with the absence of any major new title to draw in more casual players.

It’ll be interesting to see how things change this month with the launch of Pokémon Pokopia, a Switch 2 exclusive which sold 2.2 million copies worldwide in its first four days, although one million of those were in Japan.

There doesn’t appear to have been any big PlayStation 5 discounts in the US last month, so it’s unclear what’s keeping the console above the Switch 2 over there – but we’d speculate this is likely related to the latter’s thin software slate in 2026 so far.

On the software side, Resident Evil Requiem debuted as the best-selling game of 2026 so far in the US, surpassing NBA 2K26 and Call Of Duty: Black Ops 7.

Additionally, Resident Evil Requiem’s launch week dollar sales were 60% higher than the launch week total of 2021’s Resident Evil Village. Capcom has already confirmed the title is the fastest-selling game in the series, surpassing six million copies sold.

In regards to February’s chart, other new entries include Dragon Quest 7: Reimagined at number nine and Mario Tennis Fever at 11 (digital sales not included, as is the norm for all Nintendo releases).

God Of War: Sons Of Sparta debuted at 14, My Hero Academia: All’s Justice landed at 17, while Resident Evil Generation Pack – combining Resident Evil 7, Resident Evil Village, and Resident Evil Requiem – crashed in at 20.

It’s interesting to see the PS5 maintaining its sales momentum while the Switch 2 experiences a slump. The gaming industry is always full of surprises, and trends like these can shift quickly. Resident Evil Requiem topping the charts is a great highlight for fans of the franchise as well!
