It’s not a great start to 2026 for Sony as PS5 could be wide open to hacks and more jailbreaks, as the console’s ROM keys have reportedly leaked. Images of the leaked keys have been circulating online since yesterday, with sites like X scrambling to take down some of the leaks.
What leaked ROM keys might mean for PS5 hacks, jailbreak, and piracy
Although we’ve seen the leaked material ourselves, we’re not going to post any links or share screenshots here because of potential legal action from Sony, and because we don’t condone piracy. A Google search should suffice for the curious souls. However, if you’re just here for a summary of what happened in layman’s terms, then this is what we’ve gathered.
Hackers accessing ROM keys essentially means a potential hardware-level hack, which can’t simply be fixed with a system software update. Think back to when modded Xbox 360s and PS3s hit the market loaded with pirated games. This is basically the first step towards that. However, right now, neither a significant jailbreak nor piracy will be an overnight affair.
Do note that PS5 has already been jailbroken to an extent, but not significantly.
For the average user, this development doesn’t mean much yet. For hackers, this means they can now potentially create custom firmware for PS5, bypassing all of Sony’s security and checks. Eventually, emulation and pirated games may work.
We’re not sure what Sony plans to do about it beyond a hardware revision. But we’ll find out soon enough.
