It looks like Sony is quietly rolling out a new PS5 feature update that those who play multiplayer games have been requesting for a long time now. Up until recently, players who teamed up with strangers online in multiplayer games and used PS5’s Party Chat to communicate could not see who was talking, as the console doesn’t display who’s speaking. That has changed now… for some.
Sony rolling out new PS5 party chat feature update in phases, it seems
Multiple users have reported receiving a new “Display Who’s Speaking” option in the PS5 Party Chat menu. This is a new addition that isn’t available to everyone yet, but we’ve seen enough reports to conclude that this is real. One Reddit user shared the screenshot below:

This feature has existed on Xbox consoles for a long time. While it wasn’t a dealbreaker, those who play multiplayer games with strangers online and use PS5 Party Chat with folks outside their real-life circle have inquired about this feature over the years, as seen in this ResetEra thread and this Reddit post.
There is some speculation that PS5’s new Party Chat feature is currently being rolled out to beta participants, but I am not aware of a new firmware in beta. My guess is that this is a feature update that is automatically being applied to consoles in phases.
