PS5 fans left confused by reported changes coming to PlayStation Network

The PlayStation Network (PSN) is planning to change its name, according to a leaked Sony email, with rumours of even bigger changes on the way in 2026.

There remain a lot of unanswered questions about the PlayStation 6 and Sony’s next gen plans in general. For starters, while a new home console is currently in the works, it’s been rumoured that Sony is planning a separate handheld version as well – due out at the same time.

New generations of hardware also tend to mark a shift in strategies and priorities, and we’re already seeing that with Sony, as it’s reportedly ditching PC ports of its single-player games, such as the upcoming Wolverine.

Now it’s claimed that Sony is planning changes for its PlayStation Network service too; a decision that so far has PlayStation owners more perplexed than excited.

According to Insider Gaming, an email has been sent out to developers alerting them that Sony plans on dropping the PlayStation Network branding altogether this September (the same month as Wolverine’s launch and just ahead of GTA 6).

Sony says this is ‘in order to properly capture the breadth of our evolving digital services.’ For the record, PlayStation Network encompasses not just the PlayStation Store, where you can digitally buy games and movies, but also PlayStation Plus and the PlayStation Music streaming service.

So, does this mean Sony has new plans for the PlayStation Network as a whole? Perhaps some kind of overhaul? Apparently, no, as the email makes no mention of any further changes and stresses that the name is being abandoned merely to ‘simplify and unify branding.’

The email states: ‘The upcoming changes are purely visual and will not introduce any technical alterations to our offerings. … All features currently associated with PSN, including core network features such as friends, multiplayer, and trophies, will remain unaffected and available to players.’

This suggests that all that’s happening is that the PlayStation Network is getting a new name, although the email doesn’t indicate what that might be (or why it needs to change).

William R. Aguilar on X claims that he’s known about these plans since 2023 and theorises Sony could merge all its digital services (including games, music, and the Crunchyroll anime streaming service) into one subscription.

But this seems very unlikely since any such subscription would be obscenely expensive and would risk driving away more customers than attracting them, especially when the PlayStation 6 is already expected to have a hefty price tag.

Over on Reddit, some fans speculate Sony could replace PlayStation Network with the PlayStation Plus branding (which is arguably more well known) or rename it to something like PlayStation Online, while others joke that it will become unnecessarily confusing, like PlayStation Network Network or PlayStation MAX GO.

Most people, though, just seem confused over why Sony’s changing it to begin with, finding the whole thing pointless and comparing it to other companies’ attempts at rebranding.

‘Whatever they’ll choose, I’m sure this is gonna be like Twitter changing into X. Everybody will say PSN,’ says Aileos.

‘Why the heck would they even need to rebrand it? This feels like when Warner tried to rebrand HBO Max as just ‘Max,’ says PhantasosX.

Some also point out that Sony tried this once already. PlayStation Network launched in 2006 with the PlayStation 3 but was made a part of the wider Sony Entertainment Network (or SEN) in 2012. That only lasted a few years until SEN was effectively absorbed back into PlayStation Network.
