A new report claims that Microsoft is considering removing its multiplayer paywall for next-gen Xbox, leaving a question mark surrounding Sonyâs strategy for PS Plus on the PS6. Locking multiplayer behind subscriptions has been a sore point for console gamers, especially PlayStation players who once had free multiplayer on the PS3.
Will Sony require PS Plus for PS6 multiplayer if Xbox drops paywall?
The report in question comes from Windows Central. According to the website, Microsoft plans to remove the multiplayer paywall because it âwouldnât make a lick of sense for a âPCâ to have paid multiplayer, particularly since it would create a strong incentive for players to simply install Steam instead of using the Xbox ecosystem on that device for online games.â
Windows Central calls the next Xbox a âPCâ because rumor has it that Microsoftâs next device will function both like a console and a PC. As a result, next-gen Xbox will technically be able to play Sony exclusives that are available on PC, like God of War and Marvelâs Spider-Man, unless the PlayStation maker somehow blocks them from the platform.
This, along with Microsoft potentially making multiplayer free, will certainly have an impact on Sonyâs strategy for the PS6. But whether the company will be willing to revert some of its PS Plus policy to what it was during the PS3 era remains to be seen.
