Original Resident Evil Movie Director Intentionally Abandoned The Source Material

In 2002, Paul W.S. Anderson’s first Resident Evil movie had very little in common with the video games that spawned it. Now, over two decades later, Anderson has explained why he made the decision to create a new story around Milla Jovovich’s Alice rather than adapt the original Resident Evil game.

“I didn’t want to just do a slavish adaptation of one of the video games, because this was action horror, and in horror you can’t give away all the secrets,” related Anderson during an appearance on the Post Games podcast.

Anderson went on to argue that Resident Evil players would have gone into the film knowing who the traitor was from the start, as well as when each of the side characters was going to die.
