One of the most underappreciated Resident Evil games could be getting a remake, and I, for one, hope that it is true.
The Resident Evil series made its debut on the original PlayStation in 1996, and since that time, it has remained one of the most popular properties in the survival horror genre. There have been rumours circulating on the internet for a while that not only is the confirmed Resident Evil Requiem on the way, but so too are remakes for Resident Evil Zero and Resident Evil Code: Veronica, among others.
But the focus for today, it’s all about the very under-appreciated Resident Evil Zero, which was originally released by Capcom on the Nintendo GameCube in 2002. Perhaps it didn’t help that the game was released in the same year as the original Resident Evil remake, forever remaining in its shadow.
Set hours before the events of the original game, without giving too much away, Resident Evil Zero stars two playable characters: the budding upstart S.T.A.R.S. member, Rebecca Chambers and convict, Billy Coen.
Unexpected events result in Rebecca and Billy having to team up if they have any hope of surviving the nightmare that they’ve just crashed into, plagued with the typical horrific monstrous mutations one would expect from the Resident Evil series.

In terms of gameplay, Resident Evil Zero featured the traditional tank controls, inventory management, puzzle-solving, and challenging enemies that fans had grown accustomed to.
However, unlike previous games, in Resident Evil Zero, players were able to switch between Rebecca and Billy on the fly, rather than having two separate campaigns.
It also dumped inventory boxes, requiring players to drop items they did not need at that time on the floor to make room for other items. The latter of which was a feature many fans did not enjoy all that much.
Yet, perhaps the feature that many fans didn’t appreciate most of all (or lack of), despite having two playable characters, it was a one-player game. I don’t know if co-op would have worked in Resident Evil Zero, but it certainly felt at the time, it would be a natural gameplay mechanic.
New rumours are making the rounds once more that the Resident Evil Zero remake is in the works.
As reported by Comicbook.com, news outlet MP1st claims to have been informed by sources that not only is this game in development, but so too is the previous rumoured Resident Evil Code: Veronica.

MP1st claims that the Resident Evil Code: Veronica remake is slated for an early 2027 release and Resident Evil Zero sometime in 2028. Those dates certainly fall in line with previous rumours, and I am a believer in there being no smoke without fire.
What’s more, the rumoured remake of Resident Evil Zero is said to have the codename “Chamber” and will bring in a new voice cast to play leading roles. So I’d assume, at least for the English-speaking actors, Riva Lombardi and James Kee will not reprise the roles of Rebecca and Billy, respectively.
While we don’t know at this time who will be the new Rebecca Chambers, Jon McLaren will reportedly play Billy Coen. Jon McLaren is perhaps best known for playing Star-Lord in Square Enix’s 2021 game, Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy.
Interestingly, on Jon McLaren’s resume, he’s listed as a lead on an upcoming AAA video game for “Project Chamber”. Make of that what you will. The company Beyond Capture Studios is also mentioned, which is a motion capture studio based in Vancouver and Montreal, Canada.
That being said, we should take all unconfirmed rumours with a pinch of salt until proven otherwise. Once we learn more about the Resident Evil Code: Veronica and Resident Evil Zero remakes, we’ll be sure to update you ASAP.
Resident Evil Requiem will be released on 27 February 2026 on PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S and Nintendo Switch 2.
