The creators behind God Of War are developing a new franchise within the same universe, which will apparently be revealed this year.
After the surprise release of God Of War: Sons Of Sparta and the announcement of the God Of War Trilogy Remake, there has been much discussion about a secret project at Santa Monica Studio led by God Of War Ragnarök co-director Cory Barlog.
Originally, the project was rumoured to be a new IP, but this was muddled somewhat when Bloomberg’s Jason Schreier said ‘it’s not a new IP but it might feel like one’ in July last year. While it was unclear what he meant at the time, we have a much better idea now thanks to the LinkedIn profile of a former senior writer at the studio.
As discovered on ResetEra, the writer claims they spent five years up to last September helping ‘shape narrative vision and creative direction at Sony Santa Monica Studio for a new franchise within the God Of War universe, developing characters, storylines, and original lore that expanded the acclaimed IP’.
After this post circulated online, reliable leaker NateTheHate shared additional details he had heard about the title. ‘Yes, the game is set within the God Of War universe and the lead character will be Faye,’ he wrote on X. ‘Gameplay is said to differ from the Norse God Of War games with more of a focus on action.’
According to NateTheHate, the Faye-led title will be revealed this year (previous rumours suggested this summer) before it launches in the ‘first half’ of 2027, ‘barring any delay’.

If you need a recap, Faye is the second wife of Kratos, and mother of Atreus, who died prior to events in 2018’s God Of War. As we discover at the end of that title, she was a giant of Jotunheim, also known as Laufey the Just.
Her death is the driving narrative thrust in God Of War, as Kratos and Atreus go on a journey to spread her ashes, but there’s plenty of history that a prequel game could dive into – especially in regards to the origin of her relationship with Kratos.
The suggestion it will have a stronger focus on action compared to the recent God Of War games implies it could harken back to the original Greek trilogy in some way. Alternatively, Xbox Era’s Nick Baker described it as being ‘closer in style to Devil May Cry’ compared to the recent God Of War titles, but it’s perhaps best to take this with a pinch of salt.
If it is led by Faye, that implies it will be set within the Norse mythology – which might be disappointing for those clinging to the Egyptian rumours.
We shouldn’t have too long to wait if all these rumours are true. If a reveal is expected this summer, it could be shown during a State Of Play broadcast around that time or during Summer Game Fest, which is slated for June 5, 2026.
