Since its announcement, Netflix has kept things under wraps for the live-action Assassin’s Creed adaptation, but today, a lead has been cast, and a location has been chosen for production.

Netflix’s upcoming live-action Assassin’s Creed series will star British-born Australian actor Toby Wallace (known for Euphoria) and will be set in the main location of the Ezio trilogy, Italy. It’s also been reported that Wallace will play one of the show’s two leading roles, Deadline reports, without further information on who the mystery character could be.

Back in July, Netflix surprised Assassin’s Creed fans globally by announcing the company was finally ready to move forward with its live-action series, five years after the project was first announced. Emmy nominees Roberto Patino (DMZWestworldSons of Anarchy) and David Wiener (HaloHomecoming, The Killing) will serve as multi-tool project leads as the creators, showrunners, and executive producers. They were previously showrunners on DMZ and Halo, and will serve as the de facto heads of the adaptation (with help from Ubisoft).

Toby Wallace is said to be playing the co-lead in Assassin’s Creed. The video game series is a high-octane thriller centred on the secret war between two secretive groups (the Templars and Assassins), with one set on determining mankind’s future through control, propaganda and manipulation, while the other fights to preserve free will with the mantra “Everything is Permitted.” The series will follow its characters (which are reportedly different than the games) across key historical events — just like the games — and how these groups influence the outcome of these big moments.

With more than 200 million units sold, the Assassin’s Creed franchise is one of the best-selling in video game history (and the best-selling franchise by Ubisoft). The series stems from a deal Netflix signed with Ubisoft in 2020, and it is expected to start production in 2026 in Italy, which follows one of the most popular time periods explored in Assassin’s Creed, the Italian Renaissance. As of this posting, storyline elements and even the character Toby Wallace will be kept under wraps until Netflix and Ubisoft eventually make more reveals on the series.
