Mewtwo is back to catch in Pokémon Go this week

Marking the 30th anniversary of Pokémon, Pokémon Go is hosting a broad 30th anniversary event that will see the return of Mewtwo, one of the most powerful Pokémon in the game.

Almost completely unmentioned during the Pokémon Day stream last week, that Mewtwo is back was spotted by friends of the site and Pokémon Go specialists, One More Catch. It’s from their in depth knowledge that I can tell you that Mewtwo’s last appearance in PoGo was in July 2022 in regular form and March 2024 in Shadow form, so this is truly a special occasion!

You will need to put in some legwork during the event, but an encounter with Mewtwo will be a reward during its run from today, Tuesday 3rd March, at 10AM local time, until Monday 9th March at 8PM local time. During this event, you’ll need to blaze a trail through the Go Pass (a free battle pass) and reach rank 80, though thankfully the progress cap will be removed on Saturday to let players catch up through the weekend.

Other Kanto region Pokémon will also be highlighted through the event. And Pokémon from the region (outside of Mewtwo or Mew) can be encountered, including the Legendary Birds Articuno, Zapdos, and Moltres if you’re very lucky. Venusaur, Charizard and Blastoise will also appear in three-star raids, while Field Research can reward you with Gen 1 icons, including the thre starters, Pikachu, Magikarp and Eevee.

Come the All Out portion of the event on Saturday, it’s a full-on bonanza of Pokémon, with almost all Pokémon in the game able to be found in their natural habitats (not including Mythical Pokémon, Ultra Beasts or others that aren’t usually seen in the wild), Incense will potentially draw more legendaries, 2km eggs will have a bunch of favourite Pokémon in them, and more.
