The video game movie Iron Lung, which was self-financed by YouTube star Markiplier, is off to a good start in theaters, it appears.
Deadline reported that the movie, which was written and directed by Markiplier, who also stars in the movie, pulled in $3.5 million from its Thursday night previews in the US. The movie’s budget was said to be under $3 million, with only “barebones” marketing spend. The Iron Lung movie opens widely today, January 30.
The Thursday night box office numbers for Iron Lung in the US were higher than the Thursday preview numbers for Spider-Man director Sam Raimi’s Send Help ($2.2 million). Iron Lung booked $6 million in presales and is projected to earn as much as $10 million for its first weekend.
