In a message posted on X, Marathon art director Joseph Ross confirmed his departure from Bungie.

“I’m incredibly proud of the visual world we built for Marathon. Getting support at this scale for something a bit different is rare, and the art team at Bungie is the best in the biz. I’ll be enjoying playing the game as a fan with all of you. Massive thank you to everyone who has supported through all of it.”

Bungie may finally be seeing the light at the end of the tunnel for Marathon. PlayStation has announced that its competitive FPS will be released next March on PS5, Xbox Series, and PC. Of course, the project’s development has been turbulent due to controversy surrounding the theft of artwork. The artwork had been inadvertently included in the game.

Although the American studio has not announced any disciplinary action against the developers responsible, it seems that one of the company’s key figures is about to pack his bags. Joseph Cross, who has worked at Bungie for over 13 years, is the current art director for Marathon. But that may not last.

He has updated his LinkedIn profile to state that he will be leaving his position at the end of the year. He has also changed his X biography, which now reads “Art Director and Artist – Marathon, Dune, Destiny…” instead of “Art Director of the Marathon franchise at Bungie” as it did previously.

Cross has not made any announcements at this time, but he appears to have changed positions or be on the verge of leaving Bungie.
