Fans have been anticipating more info on the Magic: The Gathering | Avatar: The Last Airbender Universes Beyond set, and today they have it with a second wave reveal of new cards and artwork!
Wizards of the Coast slammed the internet with yet another preview drop of Magic: The Gathering | Avatar: The Last Airbender Universes Beyond, and this time, they’ve revealed new cards, characters, and showcase treatments coming to the tabletops of MTG. The last set expansion for MTG of 2025 will feature a myriad of new and returning keywords and mechanics for fans of the TCG (new and old) to cut their teeth on.

WOTC and MTG have taken the source material to heart with the new set and have introduced the main characters of Avatar: The Last Airbender as their original portrayals, but like the animated series, these characters will all undergo trials and tribulations, receiving transformed (and older) appearances and receiving ability upgrades that coincide with their journey in the series.
This transformation is emboldened by flavour text on the bottom of each card, showing where the characters have started to where they have gone. For example, Sokka has three separate cards, with Tenacious Tactician having access to Jeskai (blue-red-white mana) coloured spells, where the previous two versions (where the story is concerned) only have access to two colours of mana. Aside from new versions of characters, WOTC also unveiled new and returning mechanics to Magic: The Gathering tabletops that will be featured heavily in the set.
Magic: The Gathering – New & Returning Mechanics in Avatar: The Last Airbender

- Waterbend X – While paying a waterbend cost, you can tap artifacts and creatures to help pay for the value, like a mix of Convoke and Improvise. Tapping a creature or artifact equals one mana toward the cost.
- Earthbend X – Target land you control becomes a 0/0 creature with haste, but also still a land. Put X/X counters on it. When the land/creature dies, return to the battlefield tapped.
- Firebend X – When a creature with firebending X attacks, add red mana for X. The mana obtained from Firebending lasts until the end of combat.
- Airbend – Exile target, while it’s exiled, its owner may cast the airbent card for two colourless mana rather than the card’s mana value cost.

- Enchantment Sagas – Leaves from the vine, tales and legends from the past are embodied here, and some Sagas can change into other Avatar characters like Kuruk.
- Ally Creature Type – A tribal type that triggers abilities when other ally-type cards are in play. Invasion tactics and Katara, The Fearless are good examples.
- Lesson – returning from Strixhaven but leaving the keyword “Learn” in that plane, Lesson is a subtype of sorcery or instant that activates other character abilities. Azula Always Lies (as seen above), First Time Flier and Sokka Bold Boomeranger are cards that embody Lesson abilities.
- Clue Tokens – A returning artifact token. Pay two colourless mana, tap and sacrifice the Clue Token to draw a card.

On top of the new and returning mechanics, like every other set release in Magic: The Gathering (starting with Unglued in 1999), specific full-art basic lands from Avatar: The Last Airbender can be obtained in the Universes Beyond set, and like the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Pizza Lands, these add another layer of Avatar to the TCG tabletops. These full art lands can be seen below.

Aside from Full Art Basic Land treatments, Avatar: The Last Airbender Universes Beyond is adding the returning showcase style, Borderless Field Notes, from the main Bloomburrow set for creatures that can be seen in the universe of Avatar. There are eight rare and seven mythical cards that have this treatment, and they can be found in every MTG x Avatar product. Below, some of the specialized frames from MTG x Avatar can be seen, alongside a table revealing which treatments come in which type of booster pack.

Magic: The Gathering is also bringing back the bonus sheet for Avatar: The Last Airbender Universes Beyond, and they’re called Partner Source Material Cards. Like other bonus sheets (like Through The Ages for Final Fantasy), these specialized treatments follow crucial moments in the Avatar journey, but include cards and how they function, immediately known from MTG rebranded in Avatar artwork. All 61 of these cards can be laid out to show a major scene when they are all collected, and some are renamed for Avatar flavour.

New products are also coming with the Avatar: The Last Airbender Universes Beyond set. Starting with the Commanders Bundle. While there are no pre-cons in this MTG set, there is a bundle. It includes nine play boosters and a collector booster, with five non-foil promo cards, a click wheel and multiple lands. Three commander staples will also be included as promo cards, and they can be seen below.

A Magic: The Gathering Beginner Box is also releasing as part of the Avatar: The Last Airbender set, and it uses the foundation built from the Foundations set Beginner Box. This includes a scripted way to learn Magic: The Gathering, but with Avatar flavouring. Lastly, a Jumpstart Booster Box will be released. This is the midpoint between Beginner and Play Booster Boxes. Jumpstart intends players to open two of these to shuffle up and play against friends in a different format than usual.
Like previous Jumpstart sets, this box will contain exclusive cards (Azula, Ruthless Firebender and Sokka, Swordmaster are just two of them), and has the TLE set code. Jumpstart also includes flavourful reprints like Fiery Confluence and Descendant’s Path. All currently revealed Jumpstart cards can be seen below (as well as main set reveals), as well as a product list and suggested MSRP for each product.

- Play Booster: $6.99
- Collector Booster: $37.99
- Jumpstart Booster: $6.99
