Life Is Strange: Reunion Faces Backlash Over Chloe’s New Look

Aimed as a way to bring Max and Chloe’s story to a “definitive close”, Life is Strange: Reunion was announced overnight, but some fans are already unhappy with Chloe’s return.

Or more specifically, her new design.

Bursting onto the episodic narrative scene back in 2015, Life is Strange quickly became a cultural phenomenon, going on to inspire multiple sequels and even a live-action television show which is currently in production.

The first game, Life is Strange, told the story of 18-year old Max Caulfield who discovers that she has the ability to rewind time, allowing the player to make major choices which can affect the gameplay and narrative.

It is during this tumultuous time that Max reunites with childhood friend Chloe Price and at the end of the game, players are tasked with making a huge decision: Max must either save her home of Arcadia Bay or save Chloe.

No matter the choice you made, Max and Chloe’s story came to an end. That was, of course, until Max returned in Life is Strange: Double Exposure in 2024, albeit without Chloe.

Now to satisfy the endless cries of fans, the pair are teaming up once more in Life is Strange: Reunion and in a brand-new trailer, we got to see what Max and Chloe look like many years into the future.

Thanks to a different art-style, it is clear to see that the pair look very different but it is Chloe’s new look that has left fans feeling unsatisfied.

Fans Have One Major Question

“Who the hell is that?” One fan asked alongside a screenshot of an older Chloe Price.

Another fan even went as far as to edit Max and Chloe how she would imagine them, with Max sporting a “dark academia” aesthetic and Chloe having longer hair and piercings which definitely suits her character more.

With memes and outrage galore, it seems as though this is not the reunion that everybody was hoping for and I, for one, agree.

First of all, I am not outraged at Chloe’s new look but I am disappointed that Deck Nine is milking more of her and Max’s story.

As a disclaimer, I was not a big fan of Chloe in the original game and if you were to ask me, my favourite entry in the franchise is Life Is Strange: True Colours where neither her or Max feature.

Nevertheless, I feel as though the major decision at the end of Life Is Strange is now defunct, even if Life Is Strange: Reunion explores this.

I have never been a fan of a series “going back” on a narrative decision they made, especially if it was a bold and dividing one. I felt the same when Naughty Dog released a “chronological” version of The Last of Us Part II to cater to unhappy fans.

If you are telling a story, you should stick with it and on top of that, I would have loved to have seen a new story and characters explored in the Life Is Strange universe.

Nevertheless, Life Is Strange: Reunion is happening with or without Chloe’s piercings, and it is set to release on 26 March 2026.
