Legendary Strategy Classic Free On PC, Only For a Limited Time

A legendary strategy game is free to play on PC, but only for a limited time. So act now, before it’s too late.

Maintaining our hobby of playing video games is not cheap, whether you’re an adult buying your games or a parent buying games for your gremlins. Major video game releases come thick and fast, and potentially at £70 a pop, it can make a big dent in our bank balance.

Thankfully, subscription services such as PlayStation Plus and Xbox Game Pass are great ways to save money, regardless of the tier we choose. For example, even the top, most expensive tiers are much cheaper than a full-priced, newly released AAA game.

Sometimes we can access games that won’t cost us an additional penny that we can keep forever, such as the free PC games that might be included with Amazon’s Prime Gaming or, better still, freebie delights from Epic Games, simply by having an account and downloading its launcher.

Occasionally, the Steam store has a big AAA game that won’t cost you a penny either, such as the title that is the topic of today’s article.

As brought to our attention by the Twitter account, Free Steam Games, the freebie in question is the strategy game developed by Firaxis Games and published by 2K, XCOM 2.

XCOM 2 is the sequel to XCOM: Enemy Unknown, the 2012 award-winning strategy game of the year. Earth has changed and is now under alien rule,” reads the synopsis of the game. “Facing impossible odds, you must rebuild XCOM and ignite a global resistance to reclaim our world and save humanity.”

XCOM 2 being free is part of 2K’s publisher sale; however, it should be stated that it’s only free to play for a short period of time.

You can download and play it for free until Monday, 9 February 2026. After that, you’ll only have access to the game if you buy it.

Luckily, if you do decide that XCOM 2 is your jam, then you might be pleased to know that it’s heavily discounted by a whopping 95%, bringing the price down from £34.99 to a mere £1.74.

What’s more, you can pick up the ‘Ultimate Bundle’ that includes the base game with all of its DLC for just £10.23 instead of £42.03 with its 76% discount.

However, it should be stated that the discounts will end on Thursday, 19 February 2026.

If you’re not a PC gamer, then the XCOM 2 Collection, which comes with the base game and six DLC packs, is currently just £7.99 instead of £79.99 on Xbox, and the same bundle is £7.49 on PlayStation.
