A rumour has emerged around the next mainline God Of War title, once again suggesting it will see Kratos journey to Ancient Egypt.
The future of God Of War has been a big unknown since 2022âs God Of War Ragnarök and its Valhalla DLC, which left all the main characters on a somewhat ambiguous note.
Over recent months, thereâs been escalating rumours around a smaller scale Metroidvania prequel set in Ancient Greece. The other rumour, which stems back to earlier this year, suggests Kratos is venturing to Ancient Egypt in a presumably separate title.
Neither of these have been confirmed by Sony, but more evidence has emerged around the rumoured Egyptian title, which has now been described as the next âmainlineâ game.
According to Insider Gamingâs Tom Henderson, who originally started the rumour about the prequel set in Ancient Greece, the next mainline God Of War title see will Kratos wield an Egyptian âcurved swordâ.
Speaking on the Insider Gaming podcast, Henderson said: âThere was some weird confusion because there is the Metroidvania game in development and then thereâs also a new mainline God Of War game in development, which has kind of similar themes.
âI think God Of War, Kratos this time has⊠itâs like an Egyptian sword, you know like the curved Egyptian sword?â

While heâs vague on the details, the co-hosts suggests he could mean a scimitar, after Henderson made a comparison to Prince Of Persia. Scimitar is a Western term though, encompassing a whole category of curved Middle Eastern swords.
The sickle-shaped sword called the Khopesh is the most common weapon from Ancient Egypt and it doesnât look anything like the box art for Prince Of Persia: The Sands Of Time, so Hendersonâs description is not as helpful as it might be.
Previously, Kratos wielded the Blades of Chaos in the Greek era games, while the Norse titles introduced the Leviathan Axe. As such, itâs very likely an Egyptian game will see Kratos with a new weapon inspired by the setting.
The big question is when this mainline game could arrive. A previous rumour suggested a half-sequel in the same vein as Uncharted: The Lost Legacy and Spider-Man: Miles Morales was in the works, although that could have evolved into the Metroidvania prequel, with the next main title possibly planned for when the PlayStation 6 supposedly launches in 2027.
Either way, considering itâs been three years since God Of War Ragnarök (and two years since the Valhalla DLC), an update on the franchiseâs future feels overdue â and could possibly happen at next weekâs rumoured State Of Play.
Beyond games, Amazon is currently developing a God Of War TV series, led by For All Mankind showrunner Ronald D. Moore, so Sony definitely isnât done with the franchise yet.
