Iconic PS3 and Xbox 360 Shooter is Back, Dive Right in

It’s been two years since Electronic Arts delisted and took down the servers for Battlefield 1943. A sad time for gaming, indeed.

Now, a dedicated group of fans are working to bring the game back on PC. Battlefield fans may know 1943 as the watered down console version of Battlefield 1942, stripping down the class system and map selection in favour of a more focused, streamlined experience.

It was released as a console exclusive on PS3 and Xbox 360, with PC players unable to access the experience. And while it was fairly popular with console gamers, the shooter was shut down in 2023.

Battlefield Fans are Reviving Battlefield 1943

However, Battlefield fans have resurrected the game via a mod for Battlefield 2 called “Battlefield 1943”, aiming to recreate the experience of playing the original game but on PC platforms.

The gameplay aims to be arcade-oriented and balanced, which is easier to do with a small number of weapons and classes.

Originally released on ModDB in 2017, the mod just received a rather large patch following many years of sleep. And this update may be the biggest update it’s received so far.

The V2.0 Beta for the Battlefield 1943 mod includes a load of new features and additions, including new models for handheld and stationary weapons, new soldier models, new weapon animations, new dropkit models, new sound effects, a new user interface, and new effects.

The mod also now includes additional maps from the Attack Vietnam mod, another popular mod for Battlefield 2.

Aside from that, the mod includes all the same features you’d expect from the original game: two factions, three classes per faction, and each of the four original maps that appeared in Battlefield 1943.

The servers for Battlefield 1943 were closed in 2023, with Battlefield: Bad Company and Battlefield: Bad Company 2 also receiving the same treatment.

As of 2025, this mod is the only way for you to experience Battlefield 1943 in its purest form, at least unless EA considers doing a remaster.

In related news, EA’s most recent Battlefield release, Battlefield 6, is still going strong following its October launch. The game still sees hundreds of thousands of players each day, beating the player numbers reported for its main competitor, Call of Duty.

The game just received a large patch, including the new Ice Lock Empire State map, new time-limited Freeze mode, and several other additions to see players through to the holiday season.
