Kojima Productions has a lot on its plate currently, between OD and Physint. However, founder Hideo Kojima, who is keen on getting into film-making at some point, has other aspirations, including pioneering a “new genre.”
In a new video by Wired, where he fielded questions from fans, Kojima was asked about any new genres he wanted to take on. “I want to pioneer a new genre, so I don’t focus much on existing ones.” As for the setting, he’s thinking, “maybe hard sci-fi. I love space settings, so I’d like to try that. I’m also a fan of Westerns, so maybe that. Or a period piece, but those exist already. So I’m thinking about what to do.”
Creating a “new” genre would certainly track with his recent work, since Death Stranding was classified as a “Strand Game” before release. OD also involves changing the “service model from the ground up,” though Kojima isn’t ready to divulge how it works (and remains unsure if it will “work out”).
Physint is an even bigger mystery – during its announcement, the director said it would be an “interactive game” but “also a movie at the same time” with regards to its narrative, acting, sound, fashion, theme, and more. Thus far, Charlee Fraser, Ma Dong-Seok and Minami Hamabe have been revealed as cast members, but the title itself was in the “conceptual stage” as of August.
Neither OD nor Physint have a launch date, so stay tuned for further updates in the future. Maybe we’ll hear about the PC port for Death Stranding 2: On the Beach as well.
