It took another pop culture icon to steal GTA 6’s record as the most watched trailer in 24 hours but Sony wins either way.

There aren’t many things that can outperform GTA 6 in terms of hype. It’s easily the most anticipated game of all time and is finally set to drop later this year, on November 19… as long as it’s not delayed again.

Its announcement was a massive global event, with Rockstar Games proudly declaring that the trailer set a new record for the most views in 24 hours, surpassing trailers for every movie up to that point.

Nothing lasts forever though and it seems Marvel has broken the record, or rather Sony has with the trailer for thew new Spider-Man film.

In case you missed it, the first trailer for the upcoming Spider-Man: Brand New Day movie dropped yesterday, sharing plenty of plot details and a release date of July 31.

According to the Global Box Office X account, the trailer has managed to hit the 500 million views mark in less than 12 hours. For comparison, the first GTA 6 trailer accrued 475 million views in its first day.

Sony has yet to say anything official about this but, if this is indeed accurate, it’s sure to brag about it sooner or later.

It’s admittedly unclear how this figure has been determined, especially when there are multiple uploads of the trailer across different channels, not just on YouTube but other social media websites.

Rockstar’s own claim was similarly nebulous, but there’s been no suggestion that they’re massaging the numbers too much.

Ultimately, it doesn’t matter which trailer is doing best because both Spider-Man and GTA 6 greatly benefit Sony. Spider-Man is a key character for the company, not just in the movies but video games too, with Insomniac’s second Spider-Man game becoming the fastest PlayStation exclusive ever.

And although GTA 6 won’t be a PlayStation 5 exclusive, and will also launch on Xbox Series X, its popularity is guaranteed to drive up console sales.

As for how the Spider-Man trailer achieved this record, there’s no single reason. It has been four years since the last live action movie, Spider-Man: No Way Home, and Tom Holland’s Spidey has been MIA from the Marvel Cinematic Universe in all that time, with no appearances or cameos in other projects.

On top of that, there’s the matter of how the last movie ended. As a reminder, circumstances required a spell to be cast that made everyone in the world forget who Spider-Man’s civilian identity of Peter Parker was, including his best friend Ned and girlfriend MJ.

It was a very tragic note for the character, as he lost all of his closest relationships, and the Brand New Day trailer shows Peter struggling to reconnect with them, with MJ finding a new romantic partner.

Other interesting points of note are a cameo by Jon Bernthal’s The Punisher (a character with a close history with Spider-Man in the comics) and several villains such as the Scorpion and the far more obscure Boomerang.
