Last July, the Video Games Chronicle website reported that Gregg Mayles was getting ready to leave Rare. For 36 years, he worked on games such as Banjo-Kazooie, Viva Pinata, and Sea of Thieves.
Mayles confirmed the news in a message posted on X. His departure is reportedly linked to the cancellation of Everwild.
“Today was my last day at Rare. Thanks to everyone who played and enjoyed any of the games I helped create while I was there. Also thanks to all the people that worked on the games alongside me. It seemed fitting that I should say farewell with one final rhyme!”

It’s always bittersweet to see a long-time contributor like Gregg Mayles move on after such an impressive career. His contributions to the gaming industry will surely be missed, and it’s exciting to think about what he might take on next. Wishing him all the best in his future endeavors!
