GOG is not seeking to defeat Steam, but rather surpass it in certain areas

GOG executives say their goal is not to beat Steam directly, but rather to focus on what the platform does best. For example, DRM-free games, retro classics and* “modern classics”*, and its preservation program, in order to offer a better experience in these specific areas. For reference, said program currently boasts 267 games.

They acknowledge that Steam dominates the market, often thanks to its ease of use, but believe that trying to replicate Steam exactly would be a bad strategy. Instead, GOG wants to strengthen its unique identity while improving certain aspects of its service.

Last month, CD Projekt sold GOG to its co-founder MichaÅ‚ KiciÅ„ski, who now owns 100% of GOG’s shares. In an interview with GamesIndustry, KiciÅ„ski said:

“GOG has its own strengths and really should focus on maintaining them and even strengthening them. There is no need to try to be like the others. GOG has its own identity and its own uniqueness, which is very much appreciated by gamers.”
