God Of War and Marvel Tōkon updates rumoured for this week’s State of Play

One way or another, it sounds like something from Santa Monica Studio is getting announced this year (Sony)

As fans try to predict what will be shown at this week’s State of Play, it’s suggested something from the God Of War team could make an appearance.

After being leaked by multiple insiders, Sony has officially announced a new State of Play for this week, on Thursday, February 12. But one thing the rumours didn’t mention is that it’ll be surprisingly lengthy.

Sony is promising more than an hour’s worth of game announcements, making it the longest State of Play to date. As such, expectations are high for some major PlayStation 5 reveals.

While nothing specific has leaked (yet), a few games are already expected to make an appearance, based on online chatter, including the next game from God Of War developer Santa Monica Studio.

Trusted insider shinobi602 commented on the possibility of a new game by God Of War director and producer Cory Barlog being revealed.

‘Wouldn’t be super surprising given the target release window,’ they wrote on the forum ResetEra, before immediately clarifying that this shouldn’t be taken as confirmation that it will be there.

Another insider, NateTheHate, was asked on X about whether Santa Monica’s next game will appear at the State of Play and while he couldn’t confirm if ‘Cory’s game’ will be there, he admitted it was possible.

‘I do expect to see the game this year; but I’m of the mind it’ll be revealed closer to summer,’ he added. So, even if it doesn’t show up this week, the implication is that Santa Monica’s next game isn’t that far off and could be launching this year or in 2027.

This lines up with other claims that a God Of War Metroidvania spin-off is in development and is aiming for a 2026 launch. That said, the rumours say that this spin-off is being handled by Mega Cat Studios, with Santa Monica only in a supervisory role.

A spin-off is unlikely to be ‘Cory’s game’, although whether he’s working on the next mainline God Of War game (widely suspected to be set in Egypt) is uncertain. The studio is also meant to be working on a new sci-fi game and Barlog himself has insisted he won’t be directing the next God Of War, but that is exactly the sort of thing directors often say before doing it anyway.

Best case scenario: both the God Of War spin-off and Santa Monica’s next game show up at the State of Play, but even if both are absent, at least one of them should be announced later this year.

A much safer assumption for the State of Play is an update on fighting game Marvel Tōkon: Fighting Souls. A Steam page for the game went up last night and it mentioned two details that have yet to be formally announced: a launch roster of 20 characters and a single-player episode mode.

The page has since been updated to remove all this, but Wario64 on Bluesky saved a screenshot of the original version for posterity. No doubt these details were shared early, ahead of a new trailer at the State of Play.

Elsewhere, Forbes’ Paul Tassi has not so subtly implied that extraction shooter Marathon will make an appearance, which makes sense as it’s launching in a few weeks, on March 5. No doubt Sony will announce an open beta to drum up interest.

Other safe guesses include Returnal successor Saros, which launches on April 30, and Insomniac’s Wolverine game, although Sony may save that for a showcase closer to its autumn 2026 release window.
