Variable scares
Fun preview of Resident Evil Requiem, which I think confirms what the trailers were already showing, that this is going to be a good one and a real step up from Resident Evil Village. I see no reason it wouldn’t be a big hit, and if it deserves it then good on Capcom. I’m definitely interested.
The survival horror genre is such a strange one though, because it gets talked about a lot but very little of it seems to sell that well. I’m just glad that Alien Isolation is getting a sequel after all this time, because that was always my favourite.
I do like Resi as well and I kind of like that it’s only close rival is Silent Hill, which is completely different. There aren’t that many horror franchises, but they are all quite varied, which is more than you can say for a lot of genres. Here’s hoping that if Requiem is a big hit it can inspire even more.

Two’s company
Love the preview of Resident Evil Requiem and if pre-orders were something I did, or thought were in any way worthwhile, I’d definitely do one for this. Leon was always the best character and I love the fact that he’s now this super experienced (un-)death machine that is sent in to deal with an outbreak.

I like the thought of having two different styles of gameplay too, because the problem is Resident Evil 4 can get a bit one note. It’s a beautiful note but it’s not scary and it never really slows down properly for anything, which sounds like a problem they’ve solved, without getting into Resident Evil 6 nonsense with a dozen different characters.
I do wonder if this is why they chose to do a Code: Veronica remake before Resident Evil 0 though, because Zero’s two characters may seem a bit too similar. I do feel we’re inevitably building towards another Resident Evil 1 remake, though, as well as Resident Evil 5 style co-op. Both of which I’m fine with.

Secret ending
Although not doing a physical edition for GTA 6, so as to stop spoilers, totally sounds like something Rockstar would do I have to wonder if anyone really cares about the story in these games. The characters are great and memorable but what was the story of GTA 5? Three people do crimes and… that’s kind of it. I don’t remember how it ended or what even was the goal, because I don’t think there was a bad guy or rival you were trying to beat.
That’s not much of a complaint but I do remember the story in GTA 4 a lot more clearly and it had a fairly memorable ending. It makes me wonder whether something more definitive was planned for GTA 5 via the story DLC that never got made. That would be a shame, if there was planned to be a better ending that we never got to see.

Forgotten again
While it’s entirely possible Nintendo has a Direct lined up for February, that reveals tons of new games for the year ahead, I’m keeping my expectations in check. With the Switch brand turning 10 years old in 2027, I wonder if that’s when they’ll seek to wheel out the big hitters (whilst retiring support for the original console). It’s a major milestone, and while the Wii line did reach 10 years, there wasn’t much to celebrate in 2016!
There’ll no doubt be some key titles for 2026, but I wouldn’t be surprised if a 3D Mario isn’t among them, and there are more Switch 2 upgrades to existing games rather than brand new entries. I’m happy to be proven wrong though!

GC: Nintendo is very inconsistent about celebrating anniversaries. Sometimes it goes crazy over very minor ones, like the 35th of Super Mario Bros., but most of the time it just ignores them. There’s so far no indication it’s going to celebrate any of the many ones that are due this year, including Zelda in just a few weeks (it’s getting a concert but so far nothing else has been mentioned).

Family tested
To P B about games to play with his daughter. Lego City Undercover is great, the best Lego game in my opinion and we’ve been playing it for a few years on and off.
Also, Farm Together, Wobbly Life, Human Fall Flat, and Minecraft we’ve had fun with. There’s loads of party games on Switch as well.
I tried to post this in the Underbox but it refused it for some reason, it keeps doing that!

Time is a factor
I can’t say I particularly like the sound of Highguard. It all sounds very complicated and while I know it probably won’t feel that way after you’ve had a couple of goes there’s nothing in the review in progress that makes me want to try it out, free or not.
As even publishers seem to realise now, the problem isn’t money (to a degree) it’s time. I haven’t got the time to get into a new multiplayer game and learn the ropes and I haven’t got the desire if it’s not something that immediately appeals to me.
I do play Apex Legends, and others, sometimes but, as you said, the artwork in Highguard is super generic and whatever the story is behind it I can already tell I don’t care.
Interesting to hear that the whole mic drop disaster was Geoff Kighley’s idea though. I think I can see what he was getting at, in terms of promoting a game that was out soon, but I think unless it was a shadow drop that night it wasn’t going to work.
The only reaction anyone had to Highguard being the last game to be shown was a big old ‘huh?’ If only for that unfair mistake I wish the devs well with the game, but unless I hear some major positivity around it I don’t see myself bothering with it.
Now, if they’d made a Titanfall spiritual sequel instead… that would’ve got me interested straight away.

Last minute warning
Will you be reviewing Earth Must Die, which is out this week? It’s got a stellar British cast and coming from Size Five Games means the humour and point and clicking will be well done.
I’m hoping a Switch/Switch 2 port will be forthcoming, just as Lair Of The Clockwork God made the jump.
Euclidian Boxes
GC: We’ve never heard of it until now, but we’ll see what we can do.
Too much replayability
I love Nintendo; I am a self-professed Nintendoid.
I have been playing Super Mario Bros. ever since getting a NES, my first ever home console, in 1992.
But I’ve noticed with a few of their games over the years that the game wants you to re-play each level at least three times.
For example, I’m going through my Switch backlog, after having done so with my DS and 3DS years prior, and am currently playing Captain Toad: Treasure Tracker (I also have it on 3DS).
Now, I like the game but in order to truly complete a level, you have to meet certain criteria. That’s fine.
The issue is that you can’t do it all in one go!
In said game, you can complete the level and do the added mission but then afterwards, have to go back in and find the hidden Toad sprite.
Why couldn’t it just be there during the first playthrough?
I remember it being like this in Super Mario Sunshine and Princess Peach: Showtime! as well.

I am absolutely here for Leon and his dad jokes. If you go back to the Resident Evil 2 remake it’s actually pretty joke free so I’m glad they didn’t stick with that for long.
Wongle
Liked the sound of Resident Evil Requiem from the preview. You mentioned it being gory but how nasty did it get? I feel the last few games have been a big too PG for my liking.
Conan
GC: It’s pretty nasty. The game didn’t linger on anything in what we saw, but there is a lot of blood being splashed around, in part because Grace needs it to craft things, and a lot of the zombies are in a bad state.
