Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth – the second part of the remake trilogy (Square Enix)

The Thursday letters page thinks Destiny 3 is a good idea for Bungie’s next game, as one reader looks forward to the last Final Fantasy 7 remake.

Roll the dice
So I’m looking through the Black Friday deals at the moment and to be honest nothing is really taking my fancy. What I’m looking for is a big, juicy new role-playing game for PlayStation 5. Something like Skyrim or The Witcher 3, although it doesn’t have to be fantasy, just with a similar size and scale.

There seems to be far less of these than there used to be, and I guess that’s just because they take an especially long time to make, but it’s a shame. I’ve been looking into it and Baldur’s Gate 3 keeps coming up but it looks too complicate for me.

I’ve played Elden Ring and recently beat Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 (great game!) but I was looking at Ghost Of Yōtei as maybe the next one I might try. Apparently the graphics are good and the open world seems very big, which is just what I’m after; a big role-player that I can just sink myself into, like a nice hot bath.

GC: Ghost Of Yōtei isn’t really a role-player but we do think it’ll scratch the itch you’re after.

Final bow
I’m looking forward to the final part of the Final Fantasy 7 remake trilogy but I have to wonder if that will be pretty much the last time we hear from Final Fantasy 7 and its characters. I don’t think the remakes have been as big a hit as Square Enix hoped – even though they’re much better than I expected and probably the best thing Square Enix has done in years.

The number of active gamers who still fondly remember the original game, or at least the number that care that much about it, is shrinking all the time and it must all seem very old-fashioned to younger gamers.

It’s ironic that of the three impossible games announced at Sony’s 2015 E3, with The Last Guardian, Shenmue 3, and Final Fantasy 7 Remake, all of them were a disappointment in some way. Final Fantasy 7 only in the sense that it didn’t sell that well but for three such in-demand games they really didn’t have that much of an impact in the end.

A free lunch
At this point, with interest in Destiny 2 at rock bottom, I think Destiny 3 is the only sensible choice for the series. Resetting everything will upset existing fans but the problem is there isn’t enough of them at the moment anyway, so you really can’t base everything on only what they want.

The big question for me is whether it goes free-to-play from the start or if that was just a last ditch attempt to keep people playing Destiny 2. Free sounds good until you realise what a nightmare of microtransactions and ugly cosmetics that usually turns most other games into. But I don’t know that Bungie have much choice at the moment, especially given what Sony will do them if they don’t have a hit soon.

Glass too full
It’s a recurring theme that whenever anyone has to weigh up a gaming decision (what console, etc.), it always comes back to whether there are any good games.

It’s odd to me that this central tenet of gaming seems to get swiftly thrown to one side for a dramatic hot take. ā€˜Sure, there are loads of good games but worst. generation. ever’ or ā€˜I might have a huge backlog of excellent games, but gaming is only for the super rich’ or ā€˜Yes, this was another decent year for games, but how long can it last? There’s going to be an industry crash, mark my words.’

Can we get some positivity going in the Inbox, please! For what it’s worth, I’ve just played, and enjoyed, Sword Of The Sea, Dredge, and God Of War: Ragnarƶk, and I’m now moving onto Indy, which also seems great (albeit less of a graphical powerhouse than I expected).

GC: Only caring about there being good games and not about the developers that make them, not to mention the sustainability of the industry at large, seems rather callous. And playing older games that you already own doesn’t seem much of a counter to the idea of new software and hardware becoming too expensive.

Very indie gaming
I don’t know what to tell you about that Horses game, but I will say that the developers have some chutzpah making such a thing and expecting it to sell. I’m not familiar with their other games but the bizarre premise, the low-tech black & white graphics… I don’t know how they were going to make a profit on it even if it was on Steam.

I don’t have a gaming PC, but I’m almost tempted to buy it anyway because I bet it’ll run on my old laptop anyway, and I want to support people who are actually trying to make art and not just slop. It’s not even important whether I like it or not, I just want to help people that are trying to make something other than a corporate product.

The next go
I was having the same difficulty as John with the Last Judge boss. So much so I nearly gave up. Then I read that the boss is actually entirely skippable via an alternate route (this isn’t easy either but is more manageable).

Just this week, after powering up much more, I gave the Last Judge another go – finally I defeated them, or so I thought! (top tip: move out of the way once you deal your final blow!).

Luckily, I then defeated the Judge in my very next turn…. phew!

Now I move on to the not-so-small feat of the most ridiculous gauntlet in all of gaming: High Halls. Wish me luck on my 50th attempt and counting.

Come back later
To John who is stuck on Silksong. You don’t have to beat The Last Judge to make it to Act 2. There is an alternate route. You can access Sinner’s Road from Greymoor. Then you go through the Mist to reach the Citadel. You can go back to beat The Last Judge later, once you are better equipped if you like.

PS: Keep up the great work GC! Enjoy the festive season and all the best for 2026.

GC: Thanks.

It’s over
I’m finally calling it a day on Silksong after 100 hours. I’ve beaten the true final boss at the end of Act 3 but haven’t got 100% competition. I just don’t have the energy to search the whole map for the few hidden walls I missed. The game has been absolutely superb, with beautiful art, riveting gameplay, and a wonderfully designed world full of amusing characters. For a small indie team to produce something so magical, Team Cherry have done a fantastic job.

My only complaint is the same one I had for Hollow Knight, the game is just too long! 100 hours for a Metroidvania without any added DLC is excessive, Super Metroid was only 12 hours! Don’t get me wrong, it’s all great stuff and it’s hard to point to something specific to cut. But you truly can have too much of a good thing.

I’m very glad to be finished, especially after the struggle of the final boss fight, and at this point I don’t think I’ll be coming back for any DLC. I genuinely think the game would be better if a third of the content was cut. Less is more!

PS: For John stuck on the Last Judge, there is an alternative route where you don’t have to fight Last Judge at all. It’s worth exploring the world as much as possible for items, masks, etc. if you’re stuck, it’s much more open than you’d think. The Magna Bell item in particular is a big help, as it lessens fire damage from Last Judge. I hope that helps, although I should warn you it gets way, way worse later on!

Bit late to the party here but I just got to that scene in Silent Hill f and I can honestly say I was not expecting that! Fantastic game.

Finally just beat Blue Prince. I never thought I’d do it but I finally got there. Amazing game, even though it sounds so boring, when you try to explain it to anyone. Would love a sequel.
