Former Assassin’s Creed Franchise Head Reveals Why he Left Ubisoft

While Ubisoft and Vantage Studios had confirmed the departure of former Assassin’s Creed franchise head Marc-Alexis Côté earlier this week, the man himself has revealed more details about why he left the company in a lengthy LinkedIn post. In his post, Côté wrote about how he was essentially asked by Ubisoft to step aside from his position as head of the franchise.

In his post, Côté explained that the position of leadership over the Assassin’s Creed franchise was offered to someone else who would align more closely with the new organisational structure that the company was going for with Vantage Studios. Côté, on the other hand, was offered a new position, which he noted didn’t offer the same level of scope, mandate or continuity with what he was already doing.

“Many of you have expressed surprise that I would choose to leave Assassin’s Creed after so many years, especially given the passion I still hold for it,” wrote Côté. “The truth is simple: I did not make that choice.”

“Ubisoft decided to transfer the leadership of the Assassin’s Creed franchise to someone closer to its new organizational structure. A different position was mentioned, but it did not carry the same scope, mandate, or continuity with the work I had been entrusted with in recent years.”

Further in the post, Côté also noted that he bears no resentment towards Ubisoft in light of his departure. He still refers to the company fondly, referring to it as having been his home for the entirety of his professional life so far.

“I want to be clear that I hold no resentment,” he wrote. “Ubisoft has been my home for all my professional life, and I will always be grateful for the people, the projects, and the belief that together we could create worlds that inspire millions.”

News of Côté’s departure came earlier this week, with Vantage Studios co-CEO noting that his departure came about because he “had his own expectations and priorities related to Vantage Studios’ creation and future.” A spokesperson from Ubisoft also offered a statement on behalf of the company, thanking Côté for his contribution to the Assassin’s Creed franchise over the years.

“Following the organizational restructuring announced in March 2025, Marc-Alexis Côté has chosen to pursue a new path elsewhere outside of Ubisoft,” said the spokesperson. “While we are saddened to see him go, we’re confident that our talented teams will carry forward the strong foundation he helped build.”

“We are deeply grateful for the impact Marc-Alexis has had over the years, particularly in shaping the Assassin’s Creed brand into what it is today. His leadership, creativity, and dedication have left a lasting mark on our teams and our players. We thank him sincerely for his many contributions and wish him continued success in all his future endeavors.”

Côté had first joined Ubisoft back in 2005, and one of the first projects he had worked on during his time with the company was Prince of Persia: The Forgotten Sands. He also worked on a host of Assassin’s Creed games, including as game director on Assassin’s Creed 3. Assassin’s Creed Odyssey was the first title to have Côté work as a senior producer, after which he would go on to head the development of the Animus Hub.
