The new horror movie Faces of Death starts from a challenge so irresistible that it threatens to overshadow the results: How do you reboot a horror franchise that’s part cult curiosity, part mockumentary, and part disturbingly convincing gore-effects demo reel? The 1978 Faces of Death gained VHS notoriety as a horror tape beyond the pale, a compilation of “real” people meeting various ghastly ends captured by the camera. You could likely find it at whatever local video store had the most robust pornography section.
