Dragon Quest Creator Yuji Horii Explain Why Dragon Quest VII Was Remade Before IV-VI

The Dragon Quest series is in the deep end of remakes, with essentially four different remakes in the span of a year an half, between the HD-2D remakes of the first three games, and now Dragon Quest 7 Reimagined.

It’s starting to feel like updating the entire series might be the goal, and if it is, you’ll probably notice Square Enix jumped out of order. And that’s a question that even the series creator, Yuji Horii, asked.

As translated and reported by RPG Site, Horii commented on the fact on a YouTube channel where he does monthly streams, alongside Kazuhiko “Masharito” Torishima. Right after the 44-minute mark, Mashirito ask Horii why they’re jumping straight to seven, and it’s “not 4-5-6.” Horii answers,

“A lot of things are moving around, but it was just done first by chance.”

This remark seemed to take Masharito by surprise, as he quickly append “but VII was done first by chance.” He then follows up with “It’s like it does not mean that they are not doing 4-5-6,” to which Horii simply says “I didn’t say it.”

But that’s not even the most suggestive bit of the video, as shorty after that segment, during a discussion with MC Naz Chris, this exchange happens.

Horii: “As I said just now, we want to make them playable on ongoing platforms.”

Naz Chris: “Does that mean VII is simply progressing smoothly?”

Horii: Well, yeah there was also a period for [its] development… and we do have a lot of progress.

Naz Chris” Like, for example, IV had a lot of chapter division, maybe that’s why it could be taking more time?”

Horii: Well, well… *laughs*

That seems about as close as you can get to confirming more remakes exist, without actually saying it. But as I said earlier, it does make sense considering Square Enix’s recent moves. From Final Fantasy 7 to Romancing Saga 2, remakes have become a major focus for the company, and Dragon Quest is the series that can arguably benefit from it the most. Considering how scattered Dragon Quest is across history and platforms, it’s possible the intent might be to simply make the entire franchise playable on modern platforms. But, ultimately, we’ll have to wait and see.

Dragon Quest 7: Reimagined launches on February 5, 2026 for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, Nintendo Switch 1&2, and PC.
