NVIDIA DLSS 5 arrives near the end of this year and they claim it “is the company’s most significant breakthrough in computer graphics since the debut of real-time ray tracing in 2018.”
At least, that’s what they say, almost everyone else, from punters to game developers, have said it looks like someone has put an AI “beauty” filter over the games they demoed.
“Twenty-five years after NVIDIA invented the programmable shader, we are reinventing computer graphics once again,” said Jensen Huang, founder and CEO of NVIDIA. “DLSS 5 is the GPT moment for graphics — blending handcrafted rendering with generative AI to deliver a dramatic leap in visual realism while preserving the control artists need for creative expression.”
The comments on YouTube are universally against the tech, with many saying DLSS 5 looks like a “yassifying” Instagram filter.
Over on Bluesky the comments are very similar. Former game journalist Kirk McKeand posted “There’s something grotesque about that new Nvidia tech. Reminds me of seeing the hyper close up shots in Ren & Stimpy for the first time as a kid, except this is supposed to be something we want. Should have called it fucking Yorch Mode. Incel-ass yassification filter.”
Steve Karolewics from Respawn, wrote: “DLSS 5 looks like an overbearing contrast, sharpness, and airbrush filter. Remarkably different frames with the rationale of photo-real lighting? Nah, I think I’ll stick with the original artistic intent.”
Mike Bithell posted “For when you absolutely, positively, don’t want any art direction in your gaming experience. Disappointing to see anyone take this nonsense seriously. Such a mess.”
Bethesda have already responded to the backlash and tweeted the following: “Appreciate your excitement and analysis of the new DLSS 5 lighting here. This is a very early look, and our art teams will be further adjusting the lighting and final effect to look the way we think works best for each game. This will all be under our artists’ control, and totally optional for players.”
