There’s no award for guessing what was named Game of the Year at The Game Awards 2025 but developer Sandfall Interactive has already found a way to thank fans.

It’s been obvious for months that indie role-player Clair Obscur: Expedition 33 was going to sweep The Game Awards this year and that’s exactly what’s happened, with nine wins in total – including Game of the Year.

The developers, who were all dressed in berets and black and white stripey T-shirts (they’re French) also took the stage to accept the awards for Best Game Direction, Best Narrative, Best Art Direction, Best Score and Music, Best Performance (for Jennifer English as Maelle), Best Independent Game, Best Debut Indie Game, and Best RPG.

Sandfall’s success was so comprehensive that no other game won more than one award. The developers seemed genuinely touched though and well they might, as the game is reported to have cost less than $10 million (modern triple-A titles can cost upwards of $250 million) and was made by a far smaller team than you’d expect for such an accomplished title.

As Sandfall said, it’s hoped this could signal a new era for double-A style indie games, now that’s it been proven that you don’t have to spend hundreds of millions to make a critically and commercially successful game.

Clearly Sandfall was expecting to pick up at least a few awards, as they had a ‘Thank You’ update for the game all ready to go.
