Eidos Montreal is back in the rumor mill just the day after the announcement of a new wave of layoffs. This was reported by the website Insider Gaming.
According to this source, before Embracer acquired the studio in May 2022, the teams were working on a soft reboot of Legacy of Kain. It was known by the code name P17, as it was Eidos Montreal’s 17th project. Development had been progressing at a very satisfactory pace for a year. Unfortunately, Embracer canceled the title after transferring the franchise to Crystal Dynamics.
The Swedish group wanted to transform Eidos Montreal into a support studio. It’s no coincidence that it then supported Microsoft on Grounded 2 and Fable. There was even talk of helping Kojima Productions on OD. The studio’s teams ultimately refused, as developers would have had to be transferred to Japan.
Since 2019, Eidos Montreal has also been working on a major in-house game. Hundreds of millions of dollars have already been spent, which would make the project impossible to recoup. Cancellation is also out of the question due to the expenses already incurred by the title.
