Batman: Arkham Knight was the end to a truly great gaming trilogy, but a fourth game was always a possibility.
The ending of Batman: Arkham Knight left a lot up to interpretation as the caped crusader activated the Knightfall protocol and presumably ended his own life to keep his friends and family safe from the underworld of Gotham City.
With Batman believed to be dead the final scene shows two thugs believing it’s finally safe to walk the streets when the sun goes down, only to be met with a fiery bat demon, believed to either be Bruce operating with Scarecrow’s fear toxin or a new vigilante altogether.
The story of the Arkham trilogy would eventually be continued with Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League, revealing Batman is not actually dead and eventually remerged to join the team.
Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League was a poor continutation for a number of reasons, and seeing what we could have gotten instead is downright heartbreaking.
Concept artist Jsmarantz recently shared a design for a new Batman, from an apparently cancelled project.
“I love Batman!” his post began, before going on to say “I was so excited when I got a chance to design a suit for the Arkham universe. Unfortunately, this game was canceled, but I am still so grateful to have had the time to do another bat suit. This one was a funtake. It was a much older Batman and the suit was really holding this beaten and broken hero together.”
The suit itself is heavily-armoured with glowing red eyes rather than white, and the logo resembles the one seen in the Batman V Superman film with Ben Affleck.
From the sound of things a fourth Arkham game was planned that’d presumably bring Bruce out of retirement, but with all of his previous injuries presumably catching up with him he needed a suit that offered more protection. It sounds an awful lot like the Kingdom Come version of Batman.
It also wouldn’t be out of place for a Batman: Beyond game, something fans were screaming for after Batman: Arkham Knight ended the trilogy.
Looking at this design it just makes me sad that Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League messed with the timeline so much.
While the game’s new story content eventually revealed that Batman, and the rest of the League, aren’t actually dead it’s still a dreadful continuation of the Arkhamverse on nearly all accounts.
This is exciting news for fans of the Arkham series! It’s always intriguing to see what new developments might come after such a beloved trilogy. Looking forward to more updates on this potential sequel!
