It seems Age of Empires will be going through a major shakeup with its fifth entry. Several job listings posted by Microsoft recently point to a change in engine.
So, after the Bang Engine in Age of Empires 3: Definitive Edition and the Essence Engine in Age of Epires 4, World’s Edge will likely go to Unreal Engine for Age of Empires 5. The studio is currently looking for a Pricing Unreal Engineer and a Senior Unreal Engineer.
Applicants must have “experience in all aspects of Unreal Engine game development and experience managing external resources”. These factors suggest that Unreal Engine 5 will be used for Age of Empires 5.
