A PS5 system update has brought upgraded PSSR to Silent Hill 2, Alan Wake 2 and more

One of the key new features of today’s PS5 system software update is the wider release of the upgraded version of PlayStation Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR). Having debuted in Resident Evil Requiem at the end of February, the new PSSR promises improved image stability, clarity in fine details and performance.

One of the original problem children of PSSR was Silent Hill 2, and while the game was soon patched to work around the issues it had with the upscaling tech, it’s now been further updated (alongside Silent Hill f) for the upgraded PSSR. Here’s a quick side-by-side demonstration:

The following games are confirmed to have support, though it’s unclear if these games are being updated specifically or already had support baked into a previous update:

And coming in future:

A variant of FSR4, developed with AMD under Project Amethyst and tailored to the upscaling hardware in the PS5 Pro, this is a significant step forward over the PSSR that originally shipped with the souped up console. It is in many ways a drop-in replacement for the original PSSR – on PC, FSR4 can be forced into games in many ways, while on PS5 Pro there is a system level option to force the upgraded PSSR – however, official support in games is always better and allows developers to test and refine the implementation.

You can find the option for this in ‘Screen and Video – Video Output _ Enhance PSSR Image Quality’.
