These past few months, we’ve had several rumors about a delay for the PS6’s release. Due to memory shortages, some believed that the console would not be released until 2029 or even 2030.
According to the YouTube insider Moore’s Law Is Dead, such a significant delay would be simply impossible. The cost of postponing production of TSMC’s 3nm chips would be much higher than the surge in RAM prices. Sony has also already made considerable investments in the development of the Orion processor, and delaying the entire production run could have catastrophic financial consequences for the Japanese company.
Sony is therefore likely to choose to absorb the additional cost of GDDR7 memory (or pass it on to the price of the console) rather than halt its production cycle. Doing so would result in a loss of several billion dollars. Nevertheless, a slight delay is still possible, with the PS6 being released in early 2028 rather than late 2027.
In any case, the final decision is not expected to be made before the first quarter of 2027.
