Speculation started making rounds early Thursday morning that Sony may have acquired the studio behind a hit 2025 PS5 console exclusive. Our readers might recall a recent article about Sword of the Sea developer Giant Squid praising Sony for its support, and even crediting the company for saving the game as well as the studio. A new discovery now has some fans convinced that Sony may have bought the dev.
Has Sony acquired Sword of the Sea studio Giant Squid?
First spotted by Gematsu, Sony filed a trademark application for Sword of the Sea in Europe and is now listed as the IP co-owner alongside Giant Squid.
The trademark application has rightfully raised questions because Giant Squid is an independent studio, and Sword of the Sea was in development long before Sony stepped in. This means that there are two possibilities: Sony purchased Sword of the Sea or Giant Squid.
If Sony purchased the IP, then weโre not sure why Giant Squid is listed as the co-owner unless both parties agreed to an arrangement for joint ownership and development of future entries.
Sony and Giant Squid have enjoyed a close working relationship, so if the former has indeed acquired the latter, it wouldnโt come as a big surprise.
Weโll find out soon enough whatโs happening behind the scenes.
