An upcoming free to play RPG that looks like The Last of Us meets Red Dead might be the next thing to add to your wishlists.
CrisisX is an upcoming zombie game that looks like it combines the open-world of Red Dead Redemption 2 with the survival gameplay of The Last of Us.
From the sounds of it, CrisisX is a spiritual successor to older open world zombie games such as DayZ and State of Decay. It’s set on a large 1,200km map that can host up to 5,000 players on a single server.
Weapons include machetes and crossbows, but if you wanted to go for something a little more modern, the game also gives you full use of firearms such as pistols and rifles. One type of weapon might be better suited for some situations, whereas other scenarios will require you to change up your loadout.
Developer HK Hero Entertainment has also teased the kind of multiplayer experiences the game will have, including how the real challenge “comes from other survivors. They might build armored vehicles like modified M113, M2 Bradley, or even a WWII-era M4 Sherman tank to battle you for a single oil well. What’s your counter by then? Your own tank? Land mines? It all depends on your strategy.”
As a survival game, CrisisX contains various things to avoid like hunger, disease, and wild animals. It’s all a part of your character development though, where “eating too much gains weight, eating too little gets you killed. These rules never change, even in an apocalypse. On the other hand, lumbering, mining, fighting, even running, literally every physical activity can give you more muscle, which in turn makes you stronger.”
It’s not just about survival, but also building yourself a home. HK Hero has teased that you can make farms, fences, and homesteads to give you shelter and additional protection during the apocalypse. This includes being able to upgrade vehicles and weapons, too.
It all sounds very ambitious, but there’s hope that HK Hero will be able to pull this off. If it can, you might as well go ahead and call this a spiritual successor to DayZ. We’ll reserve more thoughts on this for when it gets closer to launch.
CrisisX does not have a set release date yet. HK Hero is currently aiming for a 2026 launch, though nothing more concrete has been confirmed yet. However, when it does arrive, it’ll be free to play.
