Developer Insomniac Games has confirmed that its upcoming PS5 exclusive, Marvel’s Wolverine, will include a disc with physical copies when the game launches on September 15th. This follows yesterday’s announcement from Rockstar Games that Grand Theft Auto 6 will not be available on disc – instead boxed copies that have digital codes inside them. The studio has yet to explain this decision though it’s an unexpected one considering the fact that GTA 6 is easily the most-anticipated game of the current console generation with legions of fans wanting to own a physical copy.
Perhaps fearing that disc-less new releases will become the norm as we head into the back end of 2026, gamers have been hitting up developers and publishers to confirm whether they will follow the example now set by Grand Theft Auto. When asked this question about Marvel’s Wolverine on X, Insomniac Games simply stated that “the physical version will include a disc in box.”
With that said, if you were hoping to lay down some serious money on a collector’s edition of Insomniac’s upcoming superhero sim then you’re fresh out of luck. Sony seems to have scaled back its production of fancy premium editions of its AAA first party games in 2026 with the exception of Marathon, which was likely meant to release some time in 2025. Insomniac commented that Marvel’s Wolverine will offer two versions: Standard Edition and Digital Deluxe Edition.
In case you missed it, Sony shared an extended Wolverine gameplay trailer during its PlayStation State of Play June 2026 broadcast. In this new trailer, debuted by creative director Marcus Smith, Wolverine is on the trail of some mutant kids who have been captured by cybernetically enhanced soldiers known as The Reavers. Leaping into the incredibly bloody action, Wolverine can take a stealthy approach to brutalising the enemies. With his trademark claws and superhuman healing factor (he also seems to have a suit that very easily cleans itself from blood) he’s the perfect protagonist for a combat-heavy action game. Insomniac has really leant into this with an especially bloody looking take on superhero combat with dismemberment and plunging blades to go with the acrobatic lunges and fast-paced scrapping against a range of augmented enemies that tote guns and energy weapons in addition to their cybernetic upgrades.
