Sonic Frontiers – Definitive Edition is out now on Nintendo Switch 2

Sega has shadow-dropped Sonic Frontiers – Definitive Edition onto Nintendo Switch 2 during the blue blur’s 35th anniversary stream.

Sonic Frontiers – Definitive Edition looks to live up to its name by including the base game, all the game updates since launch, and with enhanced graphics and performance compared to the original Switch release from 2022.

The post-launch updates had followed a roadmap through 2023 to add things like a photo mode, new challenge modes, open zone challenges, and culminated in new playable characters beyond Sonic and a new batch of story in the Final Horizon story arc.

It’s been a few years now since Sonic Frontiers launched and sought to bring Sonic into a new style of platformer. Having struggled for decades to translate the speedy 2D platforming into full 3D with linear levels, Sonic Team decided to break things up with a more open world setting in the Starfall Islands, introducing battles with angular, robotic foes and environmental puzzles to solve along the way.

The game divided critics and fans at the time, but even with some clear flaws, Dom genuinely enjoyed it for our Sonic Frontiers review. He said, “With a revelatory open world to zip around and entertaining boss battles alongside the more traditional Cyber Space levels, Sonic Frontiers is the best that Sega’s hedgehog has been for years.”

Sonic’s 35th anniversary stream also saw the reveal of another big update for Sonic Racing: CrossWorlds, to bring Classic Sonic to the game, as well as an upcoming Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles DLC pack. They confirmed Shadow and Sonic Pico Cat for Sonic Pico Park, and there’s a Sonic Live in concert tour kicking off in December and with a global tour to follow.
