Officially revealed during State of Play, God of War Laufey effectively marks a fresh start for the series. Kratos is no longer the protagonist; instead, we’ll play as his late wife, Faye.
Santa Monica Studio showed over 20 minutes of gameplay footage. Following that, IGN published an interview with the game’s director, Ariel Lawrence, and the franchise’s creative director, Cory Barlog. They explained that the game’s main goal is to recreate a sense of fluidity and intensity during combat. Thus, Faye will be more agile and faster.
“Faye has a different physique than Kratos. She isn’t as massive as he is, but she’s just as formidable a warrior. So it was essential for us to develop her agility, flexibility, and speed, while retaining her incredible offensive potential. That was a crucial point to refine. As developers, we reviewed all the games we’ve created, the Greek and Norse sagas, and we wanted to stay true to our roots in terms of combat: that fast, visceral style, the fluidity of the Greek sagas, but also the more intimate and brutal aspect of the Norse sagas, to create a unique character specific to Faye.”
With God of War Laufey, we’ll see Kratos’ very direct and thoughtful side during battles, all influence of the Greek saga.
