Off the back of 007 First Light, James Bond fans can download a remake of GoldenEye for free on PC.
In case you’re just wrapping up your playthrough of 007 First Light, which came out last week, you might want to check out more of the best James Bond games to keep the spy fantasy going.
GoldenEye 007 remains a favourite amongst fans of the FPS genre, and it’s easy to see why, thanks to its tight gunplay and fabulous level design.
However, it’s a pretty difficult game to access these days. You can play the original Nintendo 64 version on Nintendo Switch Online, or the new-gen port on any modern Xbox console.
On PC, you’re out of luck, which makes this fan remake of the original game all the better to download.
GoldenEye: Source is a mod that’s been around since 2005, meaning it pre-dates the official remake of the game from Activision by around five years.

GoldenEye: Source Is A Remake For All Bond Fans To Download
As the title suggests, the remake is powered by Source, the game engine best associated with games like Half-Life, Portal and Counter-Strike.
The game is a multiplayer-only total conversion of Half-Life 2, aiming to bring back the memories and experiences of the original GoldenEye 007 with the technology of the Source Engine.
The mod includes both multiplayer and single-player maps taken from the original Nintendo 64 version, and converts them to function in the Source Engine. Tweaks and changes have been made to them where needed as well, but the overall essence is still there.
As well as that, it also includes some new maps taken from other James Bond media, such as Casino Royale, based on the movie Casino Royale.
To circumvent GoldenEye purists who only want an experience similar to the original game, GoldenEye: Source has two types of maps to play: “Classic” and “Neo”, which separate the original maps from the newer ones.
Alongside this, GoldenEye: Source has 10 game modes to play, ranging from classic deathmatch modes to the unique ones found in the original GoldenEye, such as The Living Daylights, where players need to hold flags to win points, or You Only Live Twice, where every player only gets two lives.
Since its beta release in 2005, the mod has undergone a few big updates. A full version was released five years later in 2010, where it kept receiving new updates over the years that followed.
The 5.0 release in 2016 was arguably the mod’s biggest success, prompting thousands of players to flood the servers and play the game for a few months, just one year shy of the original game’s 20th anniversary.
Even to this day, you can still find a few servers which are populated. Occasionally, a certain streamer or community will start playing it, which drives up player numbers for a week or two before returning to normal.
If you’d like to download GoldenEye: Source, you can grab it now from the mod’s official website.
