Eidos Montreal cancels a game that has been in development for seven years

Following a bombshell announcement yesterday regarding layoffs, it has been revealed that Eidos Montreal has canceled an ambitious open-world game project. This project, known by the code name Project P11, had been in development for several years and represented a significant investment for the studio. It was ultimately scrapped amid a difficult period for the company, marked by internal restructuring and strategic changes imposed by its parent company, Embracer Group.

The game was intended to offer an open-world action-adventure experience but was never officially announced to the public. Insider Gaming had received exclusive images of the title, on the condition that they not be revealed. Players took on the role of River, part of a group of teenagers capable of warding off evil spirits. They possessed magic staffs as well as magical creatures they could ride, including Redheart, River’s companion, who resembled a giant moose.

This cancellation is part of a series of projects that have been scrapped in recent years, including a new Deus Ex, which highlights the studio’s ongoing difficulties. Eidos-Montréal has indeed experienced several recent rounds of layoffs, a direct result of these cancellations and a broader reorganization. Today, the studio appears to be shifting toward a role as a co-developer on external projects, such as Fable or Grounded 2, rather than producing its own major games.
