Hytale: rise, fall and return of an extraordinary project

Hytale: rise, fall and return of an extraordinary project

For years, Hytale was considered one of the most anticipated games in the industry. Initially announced in 2018 by Hypixel Studios, it ultimately went through nearly a decade of chaotic twists and turns, worthy of one of the greatest stories of our time. The game finally released in early access in January 2026 and achieved massive success, with several million players showing up on launch day. How did we get here? What crazy story lies behind this new cube-based universe? Let’s travel back in time together to discover the incredible odyssey of Hytale.

► Origins: a Minecraft server turned phenomenon (2013–2015)

The first step of our journey takes us to 2013. To set the scene: it’s the year the PlayStation 4 launched, the wealthiest people had an iPhone 5, PewDiePie dominated YouTube, and above all… Minecraft was at its peak. If we’re talking about this game specifically, it’s because it is actually at the very origin of Hytale.

Two fans of this blocky game, Simon Collins-Laflamme, known under the pseudonym Hypixel, and Philippe Touchette, had created a few years earlier a particularly ambitious multiplayer server called Hypixel. It quickly became one of the most popular in the Minecraft scene, offering dozens of original mini-games, narrative-driven maps, and a strong community. The team developed deep expertise in sandbox content creation and community management.

However, one event would deeply influence the course of things. Mojang Studios, creators of Minecraft, changed their terms of service. These changes limited certain monetization models for multiplayer servers, leading to an estimated 85% drop in Hypixel Server‘s revenue. Faced with this situation, the team began considering a radical solution to fully control their universe, economy, and community tools: creating their own game.

► The birth of Hytale and Hypixel Studios (2015–2018)

In 2015, development of Hytale officially began. Devs from the Hypixel server decided to turn their experience into a full-fledged independent sandbox. The project aimed to combine several elements: a procedurally generated open world, RPG and adventure mechanics, powerful creation and modding tools, and a multiplayer system allowing players to create custom servers.

To structure everything, the team founded Hypixel Studios, a separate entity from the Minecraft server. Initial funding came partly from server revenue and investors, including one that might ring a bell… Riot Games. Yes, the giant behind League of Legends, to name just one. And so development began quietly, at least until December 2018.

â–º The spectacular 2018 announcement

Here we are. The moment has come. On December 10, 2018, the first official trailer for Hytale was released. It showcased a sandbox game inspired by Minecraft, but far more ambitious: diverse creatures and biomes, advanced combat systems, and even story elements and dungeons. And that’s not all, it would also get integrated modding tools and mini-games alongside custom servers.

The video quickly went viral on YouTube, racking up tens of millions of views and capturing the attention of the entire industry. A massive number of players signed up for the upcoming beta, and Hytale was soon regarded as the most promising indie project inspired by Minecraft. To this day, the trailer has surpassed 60 million views, quite an extraordinary number for an announcement trailer at the time.

The momentum was unstoppable. Hypixel Studios published blog posts almost every week: detailed updates, concept art, gameplay mechanics… It was incredibly exciting to follow. The team was fully committed, sharing their vision and intentions, further strengthening their bond with the community.

► Acquisition by Riot Games and struggles (2020–2024)

Given the project’s enormous potential, Riot Games decided to go beyond its role as an investor. In April 2020, Riot announced the full acquisition of Hypixel Studios. For the studio, this brought several advantages: strong funding, access to technical and human resources, and the possibility of releasing the game on multiple platforms. But things didn’t go exactly as planned…

This new scale significantly changed the project’s direction. Shortly afterward, Simon Collins-Laflamme left the studio, feeling misaligned with the project. While a public beta had originally been expected soon after the 2018 announcement, several technical decisions greatly delayed development. Riot Games wanted the game to meet expectations. During 2021 and 2022, the team decided to completely rewrite the game engine to support consoles and mobile platforms.

This decision had several consequences: many features had to be rebuilt, timelines kept extending, and the project’s ambition continued to grow. Many began to fear what is commonly known in the industry as scope creep, meaning a continuous and often excessive expansion of objectives. Communication became scarcer, blog posts slowed down, and the project nearly disappeared from the public eye, worrying the community.

â–º A shocking cancellation and an unexpected revival (2025)

On June 23, 2025, after years of complications, expanding promises, and an endless wait, Hypixel Studios announced something no one wanted to hear: the cancellation of the project by Riot Games. After more than €140 million invested according to some estimates, it seemed like the end of the line for Hytale.

What followed was an unexpected twist: the community made noise… lots of noise. Petitions, calls to Riot, tribute videos… their involvement was undeniable. The message was clear: Hytale could not go and die just like that. And someone was listening.

A post on X sparked a wave of hope:

“I’m currently in discussions with Riot Games to buy back Hytale. […] I’m even ready to invest $25 million to finish the game—that’s how much I believe in it. No Kickstarter, just raw passion, pressure, and risk. Reduce ambition: older engine, PC-only at first, open-source parts, a small team, remove unfinished features to speed up the beta…”

It was Simon Collins-Laflamme, who, despite selling Hypixel Studios back in 2020, never stopped believing in the project. After months of negotiations and discussions with Riot Games, we got yet another post:

“We did it. Hytale is saved. We have bought back Hytale from Riot Games. […] While it wasn’t reasonable for them to continue development in its current form, they ultimately wanted what was best for players, which is why we can now benefit from a reworked version.”

A team of about 30 people was rehired, most of whom were already familiar with the project. The studio became fully independent again and committed to funding the game for the next 10 years. No publisher, no external funding. The team chose a new direction: abandoning the cross-platform engine developed under Riot Games and returning to the original engine, with a strong focus on a fast early access release. The philosophy returned to its roots—community-driven development. Play, create, give feedback, and watch the game evolve.

â–º Early access release (2026)

The hype is massive. On social media, the early access release date is announced: January 13, 2026. The game includes an exploration mode with a procedurally generated world, a creative mode, and modding tools for custom content. Some highly anticipated features, like official mini-games and a story-driven adventure mode, are planned for later.

Hypixel Studios shares striking updates, expecting over one million players on launch day and recommending users download the launcher in advance to avoid server overload. On top of that, development costs for the next two years have already been fully funded through pre-orders.

The day arrives: January 13, 2026. After countless challenges, Hytale launches to overwhelming success. Simon Collins-Laflamme reports an astonishing 2.8 million players. On Twitch, it becomes the most-watched game in the world with 420,000 concurrent viewers.

Players are thrilled, and so is the studio. Modders waste no time, continuously creating new content and making the game feel alive. Updates follow quickly, helping solidify Hytale, which likely has a bright future ahead.

â–º What can we learn from this?

This story will likely remain one of the most turbulent development journeys in modern gaming. The game now aims to turn a decade of anticipation into a lasting universe for players and creators.

Whether it becomes a pillar of modern sandbox gaming or simply a cult project with an extraordinary history, Hytale has already left its mark on the industry through the scale of its ambition and the exceptional loyalty of its community.

If there’s one thing to remember, it’s the closing words from the YouTube video by Noxyss, a member of the Hytale FR team, who speaks on the matter in a more human and intimate way:

“Hytale is the story of a community that refused to give up. It’s the story of a creator who never stopped believing in his project. It’s the story of a team that got the chance to come back. And it carries a message for all creators, all dreamers, and anyone who thinks their idea is too big, too difficult, or too impossible.”
