Free PS5 Shooter Being Delisted, Shuts Down Later This Month

In a surprise piece of news, a recently released PlayStation 5 shooter is shutting down later this month, bringing the end to a game that has only been out just a couple of months.

Highguard, the free-to-play hero shooter from developer Wildlight Entertainment that was released just earlier this year, will be shutting down on March 12, 2026. The decision was confirmed by Wildlight Entertainment in a recent message to fans on social media.

“Today we’re sharing difficult news. We have made the decision to permanently shut down Highguard on March 12,” wrote Wildlight Entertainment. “Since launch, more than 2 million players stepped into Highguard’s world. You shared feedback, created content, and many believed in what we were building.

“For that, we are deeply grateful. Despite the passion and hard work of our team, we have not been able to build a sustainable player base to support the game long term. Servers will remain online until March 12th. We hope you’ll jump in with us one more time to show your support and get those final great matches in while we still can.

“The team is excited to release one final game update to enjoy in the remaining life of the game. We’ll be adding a new Warden, a new weapon, account level progression, and skill trees! Full patch notes are coming, and we’re targeting tonight or tomorrow morning for patch release.”

Highguard’s history is a rocky and controversial one. Originally announced during The Game Awards 2025, the game was met with lukewarm reactions, with many questioning the decision to have the game showcased as the final game at the award show. Shortly after its release, the game received mostly negative reactions, with many citing the game as having too overly complex mechanics, resulting in low player numbers.

Following its release, reports also surfaced that Wildlight Entertainment had been funded largely by Chinese conglomerate Tencent. Following those reports, in an all-hands meeting last month, the company reportedly revealed that Tencent had pulled its funding, resulting in a large amount of layoffs at the company, leaving just a “core group” of employees left to work on Highguard’s development.
