Hogwarts Legacy 2 and Rocksteady’s Batman hinted at for 2028 by Warner

Warner Bros. seems to be aiming to release its Hogwarts Legacy sequel within the next couple of years, as it promises a return to its biggest franchises.

Aside from Hogwarts Legacy in 2023, Warner Bros. hasn’t had a real gaming hit in years and even the financial success of the Harry Potter game seems to have not been enough to support the gaming division.

Not only were multiple studios shuttered last year, with the Wonder Woman game being cancelled, but Warner Bros. intends on selling itself to Netflix (or possibly Paramount), which will likely put all future gaming projects at risk.

With the entire company facing an uncertain future, JB Perrette, CEO and president of global streaming and games at Warner Bros., has commented on its gaming strategy going forward and has implied that the already confirmed Hogwarts Legacy sequel will be out within the next couple of years.

Describing 2025 as ‘a year of reset’ (which is apt as the only major gaming release from Warner Bros. that year was the Switch 2 port of Hogwarts Legacy), Perrette told Variety that the division was ‘distracted going after too many IPs with too broad a set of studios.’

We’re not sure what IPs Perrette could be referring to when the last several years of Warner Bros.’ gaming strategy was centred entirely around just four IPs: Harry Potter, DC Comics, Game Of Thrones, and Mortal Kombat.

Although 2026 will see the launch of a new Game Of Thrones mobile game and a new Lego Batman, Perrette went on to say that ‘real fruits’ will come in 2027 and 2028 when ‘we return to some of our biggest franchises.’

Again, that doesn’t seem to make much sense, given how few franchises they ever deal with, but it certainly implies their planning to unleash their big hitters.

It’s reasonable to assume Perrette is referring to Hogwarts Legacy 2, especially since the goal is to have it coincide with the new Harry Potter TV show that’s meant to start airing next year.

It’s possible he’s hinting at another Batman game, too since the Dark Knight remains the most famous and popular DC Comics character. Rocksteady is also supposed to be working on something Batman related following the disastrous Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League.

Whether Perrette considers Game Of Thrones and Mortal Kombat among those ‘biggest franchises’ isn’t as clear. When it comes to the former, Warner Bros. has only ever published mobile games, with even this year’s War For Westeros PC strategy game being handled outside of the company.

Mortal Kombat, meanwhile, could be less of a priority following Mortal Kombat 1’s poor sales performance, where it fell short of the series’ usual expectations.

It’s believed this led to DLC plans being cut short and NetherRealm Studios has since moved onto its next project. That may be the oft-rumoured Injustice 3, although that could need some kind of reboot to fit more in line with James Gunn’s cinematic universe.

The Injustice games were set in a darker universe and made a big deal of having an evil Superman, but that concept is old hat at this point, and it’s likely a new fighter would feature more traditional interpretations of him and characters like Wonder Woman.
