After the announcement last week, insider Detective Seeds has provided new information about the events that led to the demise of Bluepoint Games. As a reminder, the developer will be closing its doors next month. Four employees of the studio discussed the following details. Of course, it is difficult to know if these details are entirely true.
First of all, it’s important to note that there are various reasons why Bluepoint Games moved away from remakes. Firstly, the new version of Shadow of the Colossus, released in 2018, lost money for Sony despite its undeniable qualities. In addition, a large part of the team wanted to move on to a completely original project.
However, after the release of Demon’s Souls on PS5 in 2020, Bluepoint expected to be given the remake of Bloodborne. A design department with one or two people had even been set up. However, the project was never approved due to the relationship between Sony and FromSoftware, which has been described as “fragile”. Sources even say that such a remake will never see the light of day because of these issues between the two companies.
After being acquired in 2021 and supporting Santa Monica Studio on God of War Ragnarok, Bluepoint began working on a new episode without knowing that it would be a GAAS title. At the time, PlayStation CEO Jim Ryan wanted to model the God of War franchise on Assassin’s Creed by exploring different mythologies. No creative director had been appointed for the project, and several designers and key members of Santa Monica joined the team. Ultimately, this partnership gave rise to tensions, and when the staff was informed of the game service nature of the title, 75% were against the idea. Due to missed deadlines, the project was canceled in early 2025.
Subsequently, Bluepoint reportedly proposed a remake of Jak and Daxter, one of Resistance, and even a remaster of Shadow of the Colossus with new content. Bloodborne was back on the table for two to three months before being rejected again by Sony. Two new licenses were also in the works, including one called Black Fang. This was a spin-off of Ghost of Tsushima. The Japanese company gave the studio teams five to six months (until March 2026) to prove they could make it happen.
On February 19, employees were informed of the closure of Bluepoint Games and the cancellation of Black Fang. The final closure will take place on March 2, 2026.
