Resident Evil fans have suggested that the rumoured file size for Requiem may tease a long-standing series bonus game mode.
Earlier this week, the file size for Resident Evil Requiem was reported to be 72.88 GB on PlayStation 5.
This is according to PlayStation Game Size on X (formerly Twitter), who usually has inside knowledge regarding file sizes and pre-loads for upcoming games released on PlayStation consoles.
On the surface, 72 GB for a single-player game that is estimated to be around 18 hours in length seems pretty normal. Itβs usually textures and audio files which bloat these sizes up quite high, after all.
However, itβs worth pointing out that previous Resident Evil games have not had file sizes this large at launch. At launch, the PS5 version of Resident Evil 4βs remake came to 58 GB, while Resident Evil Village and Resident Evil 2 were around 27 GB.

On the whole, Capcom tends to be quite conservative with install space when it comes to its RE Engine games. This is how Resident Evil games have tended to be quite low in terms of install size.
To account for that 72 GB, some Resi fans have theorised that this could mean Capcom is prepping something a little extra on top of the gameβs alleged 18 hour campaign.

Could Resident Evil Requiem Feature The Mercenaries Game Mode?
As you may know, nearly every Resident Evil game has a bonus game mode called The Mercenaries. It was available in Resident Evil Village and Resident Evil 4, but you can trace its origins all the way back to the original Resident Evil 3 in 1999.
The Mercenaries is a bonus game mode using characters and locations from the story mode, typically involving you racking up a high score by killing various enemies within a time limit.
Fans reckon that Requiemβs rather large download size could hint at The Mercenaries being available in the game from Day 1.
While the mode reuses a lot of assets from the story mode, this bloated file size could be attributed to additional characters who make exclusive appearances in The Mercenaries.
βTheres no way they have a new mainline with multiple protags and different Combat styles and not do another Mercenaries type mode. Only question is, who are the extra characters that would join in??β reads one comment on Reddit.
βGod I hope its coop mercenaries, it was so fun in RE5,β reads another comment.
Of course, it may not necessarily mean The Mercenaries is included at launch in Resident Evil Requiem. It could also just be there are a lot of high quality textures, models, and audio files within the game which will bloat the size to large proportions.
I guess weβll find out by the end of the month. Resident Evil Requiem releases on 27 February, 2026 for PC, PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch 2.
