A fan-favorite action franchise from the PlayStation 2 era is getting remastered for the PS5, ahead of a brand new prequel that’s coming.

Legacy of Kain: Defiance, the 2003 action-adventure game from Crystal Dynamics, is getting a remastered edition. The game was formally announced during Sony’s State of Play, and will modernize the game with new graphic updates, modernized controls, and exclusive bonus content as well.
Legacy of Kain: Defiance Remaster will release on March 3, 2026, on the PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch 2, Nintendo Switch, and PC. The game is available to preorder today for $24.99 on the PS Store, and those who do will receive special “Shifter” character skins for Kain and Raziel, based on the inspiration for the Soul Reaver franchise.
Alongside the remasters announcement, a brand new entry in the Legacy of Kain franchise was also announced. Legacy of Kain: Ascendance is a fast-paced 2D action platformer developed by Bit Bot Media in association with FreakZone Games. The new game acts as a prequel to Legacy of Kain: Soul Reaver, and features a retro-inspired look, while retaining 3D sections inspired by the PS1 era at key narrative points, as well as anime-inspired cinematics.
Legacy of Kain: Ascendance is also available to preorder today as part of the “Heart of Darkness” Collection on PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S, which includes both games in one bundle for $44.99. Ascendance can also be wishlisted on various digital platforms, with no official pricing or release information available as of yet.
